Atimonan Police Highlights

The Atimonan “Shootout” of January 6, 2013, on Maharlika Highway. This incident involved a checkpoint operation by a joint police and military team, including the then-Chief of Police of Atimonan Municipal Police Station, which resulted in the deaths of 13 people, including a suspected gambling lord. The event became one of the most controversial police operations in the country’s modern history, leading to national investigations by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), multiple murder charges filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ), and an eventual acquittal of the officers involved by the Manila Regional Trial Court over a decade later. The sheer scale, controversy, and long-term legal fallout make this the station’s most significant and widely reported operation.
